Penumbra: Black Plague interview
Andrenaline Vault has published an interview with Thomas Grip and Jens Nilsson from Frictional Games. They talked about
Penumbra: Black
Plague, the second and final installment in the Penumbra series. Word is:
Is Black Plague going to be longer than Overture?
We tried to make Overture about six hours long, but when the game was
finished, it contained more than eight hours of gameplay. For Black
Plague, we ran a poll on our forum to get a better idea of how long it
took players to complete the game, and the average was even higher than
eight hours. During our initial test runs of Black Plague, it took
longer to complete than Overture, so chances are Black Plague will be a
somewhat longer game!
Will Black Plague lean more than its predecessor toward horror and adventure?
Black Plague will emphasize horror and adventure
more than action. We wanted to have some action in Overture, but it
didn’t turn out quite as we’d envisioned, so we’ve increased the horror
and psychological tricks in Black Plague. There are also more adventure
elements, as there are more puzzles and the story is more detailed, In
particular, we have more voice acting, which should spice things up a
bit.
That said, there will be enough action and monsters
to ensure the game isn’t a walk in the park! In general, we’ve tried to
minimize how much you’re exposed to monsters. You’ll still have to
sneak around, but instead of having to avoid a lot of free roaming
enemies every time you go through an area, you’ll only need to survive
specific encounters. The game is also more dynamic, meaning the levels
are less linear in terms of events and monster placement.
